February 2013 - Rawkhell SqWelch

Whats the significance of your derby name and number?

Belle Tolls gave me the name SqWelch.  It’s a play on my real last name, which is Welch.  I added the Rawkhell part because Raquel Welch is a hottie and she’s the star of a hilarious 1970s movie about old school roller derby!

How did you get started playing roller derby?

It was sort of an instant obsession after my first Rat City bout.  In short order, I bought a pair of skates and learned the basics with a group called Potential Fresh Meat.  They are another group of awesome women in Seattle who teach the basic skills of roller derby.  Once I had the foundation down, I looked to the big leagues with the Rat City Rollergirls.

What is your favorite thing about skating with Rat City?

The passion and dedication of the women of Rat City.  They are extraordinarily devoted to this sport and this league.  And they are an intelligent, funny, and brawlin’ group of ladies.

What was the last thing you ate?

My awesome husband just made me a huge plate of pasta with asparagus, sun-dried tomatoes, and mushrooms.  It was waiting for me when I got home from practice!!  Now just rooting around for some ice cream.

What is your favorite off skates workout?

Yoga and soccer.  Maybe yoga a little more.  It’s the yin to my derby yang.

At noon, a train leaves Seattle for Portland while another train leaves Portland for Seattle. It takes one train 4 hours and the other 7 hours to make the trip. Both maintain constant speeds and travel along parallel tracks. If you were on one of those trains, what kind of refreshing beverage would you be drinking in the dining car?

A tall pour from Caymus Vineyards.
