To celebrate roller derby’s 76th birthday on Saturday, August 13, the Rat City Rollergirls, well, played roller derby! Both of our travel teams– the nationally-ranked All-Stars and the secondary travel team, the Rain of Terror, rolled down I-5 for a double header in Portland. The Sockit Wenches headed off to a slightly more exotic locale for two games against Hawaii leagues.
The Boston Massacre, currently ranked #6 in the WFTDA East Region, travelled westward for their Northwest Passage, a three-game weekend with bouts against Rose City, Jet City, and, of course, the Rat City All-Stars. The All-Stars were solidly in control of the game from early on and were up 81-43 at the half. Boston had a bit of a rally early in the second half where they got within 22 points of Rat City, but it was relatively short-lived. A few well-executed power jams put the All-Stars back in control and serious penalty trouble for Boston in the last ten minutes allowed RCRG to go on an absolute scoring tear. Final: RCRG 192, Boston 89.
Saturday’s opener was a bout of the B-Teams, with RCRG’s Rain of Terror going up against the Rose City Rollers’ Axles of Annihilation. Axles built up a solid lead in the first half, only to grow it in the second, leaving the Rain of Terror on the wrong side of a 229-67 final.
The Sockit Wenches travelled a bit further afield for their derby-birthday-weekend bouts, playing Honolulu’s Pacific Roller Derby (ranked #22 in the WFTDA West Region) and Hilo’s Paradise Roller Girls (currently an unranked WFTDA Apprentice League) in a double header in Hilo.. The Wenches will be coming home (well, if they ever choose to leave paradise…) 2-0 for the trip, with wins over Pacific 314-56 and Paradise 236-68.
