Rat City Returns to KeyArena on January 19th!

The wait is almost over, as on January 19th, the Rat City Rollergirls will return to the track in KeyArena in their season opener!

The evening starts off getting right into season play, as the Throttle Rockets look to blast their way past the ladies in blue of the Sockit Wenches. Both of these teams are looking to start of the year making a statement about their intentions for the championship, but only one will be able to do it for this bout!

The second bout of the night will feature something new for the 2013 season, as we will be welcoming a visiting team for January, February, March, and April action! This month, the Derby Liberation Front will be showing their stuff as they take on a batch of frisky felines from the north, the Faster Pussycats of Vancouver, B.C.’s Terminal City Rollergirls.

This season will also bring with it some exciting new action, as this is the Rat City debut for the new edition of the Official WFTDA Rules! The most noteworthy changes to watch for include the change to a single start whistle, allowing blockers and jammers to go at the same time, and the simplification of the penalty system – minor penalties are no more, with some upgraded to a major, and others no longer treated as a penalty.

It’s going to be a great season – don’t miss any of it!

Bay of Reckoning Day 1: Rat City vs Bay Area

In a jam that would show more of what was to come in the first half, Rat City’s Jalapeno Business began the game on the jam line and the lucky side of fate. Bay Area Derby Girls’ jammer, Nock Nock was sent to the penalty box for a cut major and allowed Rat to do what they do best and capitalize on a power jam. With the help of the RCRG offense, Business put up 20 points on the scoreboard to BAD’s 4 in jam one.

The next four jams were back and forth between the two teams. However, the highlight of these jams was the reintroduction of Anya Heels to the WFTDA tournament cycle. Heels dominated the pack with massive hits on blockers and jammers, forcing cuts and calls.

In jam five of the game Nock Nock (BAD) went on the line against Jalapeno Business and again went to the penalty box on the first pass, this time for a forearm major. With offensive help from Killah Kelly, Business scored a quick 20 points, mirroring her first jam and bringing the lead to 44-17. Forty of those points belonged to Business.

The next six jams featured BAD almost exclusively gaining lead jammer and, as a result, they inched closer to the ladies from the Seattle. Jam 11 ended with BAD within five points of the Rat lead.

In jam 12, for the first time in the half, Rat’s lead disappeared when Rat’s jammer, Carmen Getsome, was sent to the box with a major forearm. However, Anya Heels continued her defensive reign, demoralizing BAD’s jammer, Ivy Profane, with massive hits sending her to the floor over and over. Despite Rat’s best efforts, BAD took the lead with 56-51.

Though Rat’s penalty box was on heavy rotation of blockers, Rat’s jammer, Jalapeno Business scored a hat trick of power jams in the following jam. This powerjam allowed for Business to re-take the lead by ten points.

But easy come, easy go when, in the next jam, Kamikaze Kim was sent to the box as the jammer for Rat. This gave Lulu Lockjaw from BAD, an opportunity to re-take the lead before the end of the half. After a few back and forth jams featuring back and forth penalties for both teams resulted in a 103-92 BAD lead at the half.

Unfortunately for Rat, their penalty challenges from the first half plagued them as they began the 2nd half at a pack disadvantage, which continued for the first few jams of the half. After a BAD powerjam against Rat’s Missile America who went to the box for a major cut, the score showed BAD in the lead with 127 to Seattle’s 92.

But things began to look up for the ladies from the NW with a solid jam 4-0 by Kamikaze Kim which began a momentum shift for Rat. This continued with 2-1 jam by Carmen Getsome and a massive powerjam by Jalapeno Business (yet again) against BAD’s Chantilly Mace. This swing closed the gap to 136-121. Missile America and Carmen Getsome inched closer and closer towards the BAD lead.

This lead was finally closed in jam 34 of the game when both BAD’s Knock Knock and Rat’s Missile America went to the penalty box but Missile returned and brought Rat to a 148-148 tied score.

The jam that changed everything for Rat was when Carmen Getsome was sent to the penalty box as a jammer for cutting the track, but received a 2nd minute for insubordination towards a referee. Though Hard Cora had massive hits against BAD’s Chantilly Mace, Mace scored 24 points while Getsome cooled off. The next jam started with Getsome in the box and Lulu Lockjaw on the line for BAD. However, Lockjaw had Anya Heels to contend with, Heels made sure she was stuffed and on the floor for much of the jam. Though Getsome was released from the box and scoring, she was sent to the box a third time for 4 minors. This third powerjam in a row allowed for BAD to extend their lead to 205 to 152.

For the rest of the half Bay Area focused on clock management and penalty control. Rat’s Jalapeno Business and Carmen Getsome did an excellent job of matching BAD jammer points but not enough to get any closer to the tie Rat had just a few jams earlier.

In jam 42, Jalapeno Business lined up against Knock Knock but this time it was Business who went to the penalty box as a jammer, putting the nail in the coffin for RCRG. With one minute left on the clock, BAD’s Chantilly Mace took a quick lead jammer and then stopped skating on the track. Mace waited until the clock hit 0:00 and called off the jam, giving BAD a final score of 229-177.

RCRG Blocker of the game: Anya Heels; crushed the spirits of BAD jammers and reminded America why everyone knows her name.

RCRG Jammer of the game: Jalapeno Business and her offensive took strong advantage of her powerjams to make her Rat’s leading scorer.

BAD Blocker of the game: Brawllen Angel who contained Rat jammers over and over, getting her jammers consistent lead calls.

BAD jammer of the game: Lulu Lockjaw was clean and consistent on the track, delivering points and bringing a welcome new face to the BAD roster.

The Rat City All-Stars have wrapped up their weekend trip to the east coast today, and do so having given them a taste of Northwest derby, walking away with three wins for the three bouts.

Friday, both the All-Stars and the Rain of Terror met up with the DC Rollergirls in our nation’s capital, taking on their all-stars and their B-team, the Capital Offenders, respectively. Both walked away with wins, as Rat City won over DC 295-95, and the Rain of Terror closing it up 430-75.

Read the DNN recap here.

The All-Stars play again on August 18, against the Puget Sound Outcast Men, at Southgate Roller Rink! Details Here!

All Stars Season Takes Off on June 23!

With the Championship game a fond memory, the excitement of the all-stars season takes center stage! You’ll be thrilled by heart-pounding action as the best skaters from Grave Danger, the Throttle Rockets, Derby Liberation Front, and the Socket Wenches join forces to take on all-star travel teams from the toughest leagues around!

Skates hit the track on June 23rd
Doors open at 4:30; opening ceremonies at 5:30.
You’ll want to get there early to grab a great seat.

First up, Rat City’s Rain of Terror collides with the Skatesaphrenics, the all-star travel team of the Emerald City Roller Girls. Hailing from Eugene, Oregon, the Skatesaphrenics will be chomping for a win, but Rain of Terror has been training hard and may just call those dreams on account of Rain.

The second bout of the night pits the Rat City All Stars against the girls in gold: all the way from San Francisco, the Bay Area Derby Girls. You’ll see hard-hitting action as this clash of the titans hits the track. Will Rat City’s All Stars teach those B.A.D. girls a lesson, or or will the golden girls be taking home the win?

There’s no crying in derby…unless you miss out on these epic bouts.

Grave Danger–Season Eight RCRG Champions! DLF Wins Grudge Match

The Rat City Rollergirls’ home season is now in the books and what a season it was!

The Championship bout was too intense for a snappy summary… leads swung back and forth, forth and back, with the win only to be decided in the VERY LAST JAM. Grave Danger captain Carmen Getsome got some 15 points in that last jam, to bring her team on top after 60 minutes. If it was 59 minutes or 61 minutes, it might have been a different story, but that was the game.
Grave Danger over Throttle Rockets: 171-165

The grudge match pitted the Derby Liberation Front against the Sockit Wenches. DLF took the lead early and held it, and the game of how close could the Wenches get. At the last whistle, it was DLF over Sockit Wenches 174-118

MVPs–
Grave Danger: Method of Madness
Throttle Rockets: Missile America
Derby Liberation Front: Ann R. Kissed
Sockit Wenches: Trouble Loves Mimi

Thank you to all of our fans who came out for the home season! But it’s not over yet… The RCRG All-Stars and Rain of Terror have two amazing interleague bouts coming up in June and July!

FAQS
Q: Is this open to junior skaters?
A: Yes, but due to insurance stipulations, juniors can only engage in contact with other juniors. Although the Clinic is not specifically geared towards hitting most drills have some contact assumed in order to simulate real game play. In drills junior derby skaters will be paired with other junior derby skaters.

Q: What skill level is required to attend?
A: Clinics are for beginning to intermediate derby skaters. The WFTDA minimum skills are a good gauge although not a requirement. We ask that you can skate using crossovers, safely fall, safely give and receive a hit.

Q: Is this co-ed?
A: Not this time. These clinics will be for women only. Stay tuned for possible co-ed events in the future–the All-Stars love hitting guys around!

Rat City Rollergirls raise awareness for DAWN this Friday, May 4th at Sports Restaurant 7-9pm

Who would invite a Rat into their restaurant?  Chef/author John Howie would, and with open arms.  Of course, the Rats do have to meet certain standards – they should be female and on roller skates.  Howie has invited The Rat City Roller Girls into SPORT Restaurant & Bar as co-hosts for a night of sips, snacks and signings to raise funding and awareness for DAWN, the Domestic Abuse Women’s Network.  The event will be held on Friday, May 4 from 7 to 9 pm and tickets will include admission, two signature cocktails inspired by the Rat Pack, light appetizers, an opportunity to meet some of the team stars and a raffle for great prizes.  Priced at $20 per person, $5 from each ticket will go to Dawn as will all of the proceeds from the $5 raffle tickets.

“The Roller City Rat Girls are an amazing group of female athletes,” says Howie.  “They exert the same amount of energy to community outreach as they do to competing (which is considerable!).  We are very excited to partner with them on this event as DAWN is a charity we both feel strongly about assisting.”

DAWN’s mission is to lead and support efforts in south King County communities to end domestic violence by providing the critical services and education for survivors to make informed choices about their future and engaging communities to raise awareness and take action.

To get things rolling, guests can purchase advance tickets over the phone by calling SPORT at (206) 404-7767 or in person at the restaurant, located at 140 – 4th Ave. No., Suite 130, Seattle 98109. Rat City fan favorite team members will attend in full regalia and be available for signings and fan photos.  Tickets are limited.

Rat City Rollergirls Championship Bout, May 19th!

April’s exciting Rat City Rollergirls playoff action has finished up after a great night of roller derby. Playoffs done, Championships set!
We’ve got ourselves a couple of rematches from last year’s Championship bout! With wins in April, Danger and the TRs have punched their tickets to Champs!

Snappy summary if you missed the night’s events: in the early bout, overcoming an early run by the Wenches, Grave Danger took the win 177-110. The second bout was a very back-and-forth game but the Throttle Rockets came out on top over DLF at the end of 60 minutes: 162-118

Season 8, Bout 4 MVPs:
Derby Liberation Front: AviHater
Grave Danger: Iron Megan
Sockit Wenches: Sami Automatic
Throttle Rockets: Killah Kelly

But the excitement is not yet over – the stage is set for quite a championship bout as Grave Danger and the Throttle Rockets take play to the next level!

May 19th, Rat City will return again to KeyArena. First, the grunge match will feature DLF and the Sockit Wenches looking to finish with a big win – it may only be pride on the line, but don’t think that means they won’t be playing all out!

Then we move to the finale of the 2012 Rat City home team season – as April’s winners Grave Danger and the Throttle Rockets face off in the Championship Bout! Can Danger repeat as Rat City Champions? Or will the Throttle Rockets stop them, to hoist the trophy themselves? Make sure you’re in KeyArena to see it happen! Season 8 all comes down to this!

Tickets are available now on Ticketmaster.com or in-person at the Key Arena box office or Fast Girl Skates.

Yes, Playoffs!
You thought the RCRG season was neatly tied up with a bow already? No no no!
It’s still anybody’s trophy and all four teams are still in it to win it! Every jam will count, every point will count– you do not want to miss this night at the Key!

Our favorite purveyors of saucy, cheesy, meaty carbs, Zeek’s Pizza, is the night’s presenting sponsor. In addition, Derby Liberation Front have partnered with the Marginal Way Skate Park, and RCRG will be donating a portion of the night’s proceeds to them.

Tickets are available now on Ticketmaster.com or in-person at the Key Arena box office or Fast Girl Skates.

Grave Danger Takes on Arizona!

GLENDALE, ARIZONA — ProRollerDerby announced today that its second installment of the ProRollerDerby Invitational series will be held at Jobing.com Arena on April 6 and 7, 2012. Four new teams have been invited to compete in modern banked track roller derby’s only pursed tournament.

Roller derby is one of the only modern day female sports that is not overshadowed by a larger more successful male counterpart. The rebirth of roller derby started as a grass root, do-it-yourself sport based on the old game. It’s now a widespread competitive sport phenomenon that has exploded from two leagues in the United States in 2003, to 1,082 leagues in 37 countries today. Modern derby differs from its 1970’s predecessor in that the games are no longer staged, scripted or predetermined.

Teams competing in the Glendale Invitational will include the Arizona Derby Dames of Phoenix, AZ; the Charm City Roller Girls of Baltimore, MD; the Orange County Roller Girls of Huntington Beach, CA; and the Rat City Roller Girls of Seattle, WA.

As was the case for the Inaugural ProRollerDerby Chicago Invitational in November of 2011, the 2012 ProRollerDerby Invitational live from Glendale, Arizona will feature teams from leagues who compete on both the flat track and banked track. The Arizona Derby Dames and the Orange County Roller Girls are their city’s premiere banked track roller derby leagues. Likewise, the Charm City Roller Girls and the Rat City Roller Girls are the premier leagues in their cities for flat track roller derby competition. This will be the first time that these four teams will meet each other to play a full length bout on roller derby’s most exciting stage, the banked track.

The ProRollerDerby Invitational event at Jobing.com Arena will feature two bouts each day of the tournament. On Friday, April 6 ProRollerDerby will feature a matinee bout between the Orange County Roller Girls and Charm City Roller Girls and an evening bout between the Arizona Derby Dames and the Rat City Roller Girls. On Saturday, April 7, the losers from each of Friday’s bouts will play each other for third place. The winners from Friday advance to the pursed Championship bout. These exciting matches will start at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day of the tournament.

Grave Danger, Throttle Rockets win in March

Just when you think you’ve seen the best of the Rat City Rollergirls, BAM! the teams bring you action like none other. If you weren’t among the 5000+ fans who packed the Key on March 24, you missed a thriller… With two undefeated teams looking to take the top seed going into the playoffs and two teams fighting for their first win of the year, this was one for the books.

The early bout saw the Sockit Wenches take on the Throttle Rockets. The Wenches raced out to an early lead, but it didn’t take the TRs too long to fire up the afterburners and it was 77 TRs, 47 Wenches at the half. About 10 minutes into the second half, both teams lost key players to expulsions in Missile America and Trouble Loves Mimi. As often is the case, this was a game of power jams and capitalizing on them and the Throttle Rocket jammers spent a just a wee bit less time in the box and got the win.

Final: TRs 135- SW 107

The late bout was Grave Danger and DLF battling it out for top seed going into the April playoffs. While Danger drew first blood, DLF’s trajectory as the comeback kids over the past 2 season was very much the trajectory of the bout– whenever Danger made a move with a scoring run, DLF answered back with a run of their own. GD 55 DLF 35 at the half. Danger grew that lead to 35 points midway through the second half, but DLF swung back and took the lead on a 29-point romp by DLF’s Full Nelson, taking advantage of a power jam and a light Danger pack. But in the next jam with less that five minutes left, the ReAnimateHer came back from the dead (or, well, out of the penalty box), to get lead jam, put a few points on the board, and take back the lead for Danger. Back and forth a few a more jams with it being a one-point game with 19 seconds on the clock. ReAnimateHer got a quick lead and 4 more points to put the nail in DLF coffin.

Final: GD 122- DLF 117

Come back to the Key April 21 to see all four teams battle it out for a berth in Championship game. Grave Danger faces the Sockit Wenches again and DLF plays the Throttle Rockets!

S8B3 MVPs:

Sockit Wenches: Belle Tolls

Throttle Rockets: Skate Pauli Girl

DLF: Full Nelson

Grave Danger: Jerrica Kallio (nee Mona Agony)

DLF, Grave Danger Win Again in February

Bout 2 saw rematches from last July’s Season 7 Championships, and with the same results– Grave Danger and Derby Liberation Front leaving the track with wins while the Throttle Rockets and Sockit Wenches taking home losses. After B2, both DLF and Grave Danger are 2-0, and the TRs and Wenches are 0-2.

The early bout, DLF v. Sockit Wenches, was a heck of a lot more aggressive and competitive than the final score of 194-88 would suggest. The Wenches showed the punishing, physical play that fans (and their opponents!) expect from them but DLF had phenomenal teamwork and was able to capitalize on power jam opportunities to take home the win.

The second bout was a rematch of the Season 7 title game, with the Throttle Rockets looking to avenge that loss against 2011 Champions Grave Danger. And, for the first 20 minutes, it looked they’d be able to get it, with the TRs rocketing out to a big 51-22 lead. But it truly was a game of momentum and it swung back and forth for the whole 60 minutes with ties and lead changes in each half. And at the last whistle: 137 Grave Danger, 102 Throttle Rockets.

Next month, we’ll see DLF and Grave Danger face off to see who’ll stay undefeated in 2012 and Sockit Wenches and Throttle Rockets play to fight for their first win at the Key this year. See you on March 24!

Congratulations to Bout 2 MVPs!
DLF: Ann R. Kissed
GD: Dee Cap Attack
TR: Panda Beer
SW: Belle Tolls

Rat City’s next bout will be on March 24th, for the final match-ups of the round robin. The Sockit Wenches and Throttle Rockets will both be on the hunt for their first victory, and Grave Danger and the Derby Liberation Front will battle to see who will leave undefeated.

We’ll See You on the 18th!

If you weren’t at the Rat City Rollergirls 2012 Season Opener on January 21st, you missed out…but lucky for you, the next bout is less than two weeks away! Mark your calendar and get your tickets now!

Our second bout of the season will see Rat City’s four home teams battling it out again, as the Derby Liberation Front finds out if it can carry the momentum from January’s last-jam win to beat the Sockit Wenches, and the Throttle Rockets look to avenge last season’s loss to Grave Danger in the Championship bout!

The National Anthem will be sung by our very own Tempura Tantrum from Grave Danger…and Diverse Harmony (GLBT youth choir) will sing during halftime!

Fans, Skaters: Take the 2012 WFTDA Survey By Feb. 15th

Women's Flat Track Derby Association

It’s survey season again! Starting February 1st, WFTDA is conducting our third annual demographic survey of skaters and fans. Enter a drawing to win a WFTDA Coffee Mug and t-shirt! Five winners from each survey will be selected at random after the surveys close and will be notified by email.

The main goals of this survey are to compile demographic information from both skaters and those who love roller derby. This allows the WFTDA to track the changing makeup of the sport, and your participation will help the Rat City Rollergirls, other leagues, and the WFTDA as a whole. The 2010 and 2011 association-wide results are available at http://wftda.com/sponsors/2011-demographic-information.

For those of you who either watched any of the WFTDA “Big 5” tournament broadcasts, or even attended them in person, there’s a separate Tournaments and Broadcasting Survey available this year. This second survey will help with planning for the 2012 tournaments.

You can find the survey at http://wftda.com/survey, and it will be available through February 15th.

DLF, Grave Danger Win at the Season 8 Opener

If you weren’t at the Key Arena on Saturday night, you missed out on the first bouts of the Rat City Rollergirls Season 8! DLF and Grave Danger ended the night with wins, while the Throttle Rockets and Sockit Wenches will surely be looking to get their first “W” in February.

The opening bout matched up Derby Liberation Front and Throttle Rockets. DLF looked to have carried the momentum from their grudge-match win last July through through the off-season to take the win over the TRs, Season 7’s runners-up. This was a back-and-forth nail-biter for the whole 60 minutes, but DLF sealed it in the last jam for a final of 146-137.

The second bout pitted the 2011 RCRG Champions, Grave Danger, against 2010 RCRG Champions, Sockit Wenches. The Wenches got on the board first with a crowd-pleasing return of powerhouse jammer Anya Heels, but from the second jam onwards, Danger held lead until the last whistle, 136-86 final.

MVPs were awarded to  Derby Liberation Front’s Full Nelson, Throttle Rockets’ MaxMillion, Grave Danger’s Mona Agony, and Sockit Wenches’ Anya Heels.

Also, congratulations to the ten new Rat City skaters who made their Key Arena debut on January 21:
Derby Liberation Front: Chelsey & Full Nelson
Grave Danger: Kutta Betch, Nehi Nightmare & Trouble Dutch
Sockit Wenches: Death by Dollface, Kitty Kabooty & Sun Shiner
Throttle Rockets: Dawn Solo & Panda Beer

Our next bout is Saturday, February 18th, as DLF takes on the Sockit Wenches, and the Throttle Rockets go up against Grave Danger.
